Umar Zakaria is a New Zealand bassist and composer filled with hope for the future. His music unites diverse musical traditions to inspire communication and cooperation across cultural boundaries. In 2018 he was named Best Jazz Artist by Recorded Music New Zealand, and in 2023 was awarded the Jazz Composer-in-Residence position at Victoria University of Wellington. For this very special December performance, Umar will be exploring the balance between concepts of peace and power in music through a mixture of classic songs and original compositions, featuring previews from his upcoming projects Family Music and One Ocean. He will be joined by his current trio of Shaun Anderson on drums and Nico Buhne on piano.
